Norway is well known for its dramatic scenery, towering mountains and deep fjords. But in «Kraken», this postcard-perfect idyll is violently disrupted by a gigantic monster. The producers at Nordisk Film aren’t shy when teasing what audiences can expect from the upcoming blockbuster.

– “We’ve made a film that stands up to comparison with both «Alien» and «Jaws». But we have one element those films don’t: the world’s most beautiful nature. It’s the perfect combination — humans provoke a mythical sea creature and must fight for survival in the heart of postcard Norway.”

The story centers on a small village along the Sognefjord, which is Norway’s deepest and the world’s second-deepest fjord. When the area is struck by mysterious events, marine biologist Johanne Berge is sent there to investigate a fish-farming facility testing experimental sonar technology. Strange sounds, unusual natural phenomena and a tragic accident spark suspicions that something dangerous is lurking in the fjord. What is hiding down there in the darkness?

«Kraken» is produced by Nordisk Film Production in collaboration with Handmade Films in Norwegian Woods, and will be distributed internationally by Trust Nordisk. The film is directed by Pål Øie, known for turning Norwegian nature into a source of terror in «The Tunnel» (2019) and the horror films «Dark Woods» 1 and 2 (2003/2015).

The lead role of Johanne Berge is played by Sara Khorami, who is having a remarkably strong year in Norwegian cinema. This fall she also stars in the Christmas film «Hvis ingen går i fella» as well as in Netflix’s tentpole «Troll 2». In «Kraken» she is joined by, among others, Mikkel Bratt Silset — previously seen in HBO’s «Beforeigners» and soon to appear in the upcoming Prime Video series «Blade Runner 2099». The cast also includes Øyvind Brandtzæg, Jenny Evensen, Steinar Klouman Hallert, Filip Bargee Ramberg, Ingvild Holthe Bygdenes and Hans Morten Hansen.

«Kraken» represents nothing less than the largest international sales deal ever for a Norwegian genre film. Among the countries that have secured theatrical distribution are Germany, France, Spain and 35 territories across North and South America. Clearly, the world wants to see a monster go wild in the natural jewel that is the Sognefjord!
